November 23 (Phoenix, AZ) -- The Miss Black Arizona Scholarship Foundation Congratulates the new 2009 Miss Black Arizona Brittanee Perkins and Miss Black Teen Arizona Rozan Latham!
In what took less than four months to plan, the Miss Black Arizona Scholarship Foundation awarded two more $1,500 in scholarships and prizes to tons of contestants! With a sold-out show, more than 600 people in-theater and on the heated patio witnessed the best in talent, beauty and education on a state level with so many beautiful ladies! In a few shorts weeks, our queens will travel to Washington, D.C for a national photo shoot with all of the state winners and witness the inauguration of our 44th president Barack Obama! The National Pageant will take place July 30-Aug. 4, 2009 in Washington, D.C, it is the hope the Miss Black Arizona Scholarship foundation will for the first time send a winner to Nationals and return with a National Title!
The pageant committee garnered support from several media entities and local Valley businesses including: State Farm Good Neighbor Dondrell Swanson, Gilbert Salon and Spa HairADize, The Arizona Vein and Laser Institute, The Write Up Newspaper which sponsored the essay scholarship for the pageant contestants and many more.
With nearly 30 contestants competing in this year's pageant, the energy is at an all-time and high and the excitement is only beginning. Over the next year the new queens will participate in several local and state events and fulfill a year of service to the state of Arizona. Each contestant will develop a platform and do their part to help change Arizona!
As a community effort the Miss Black Arizona Scholarship foundation will be feeding needy families this season, Sharice Anderson was named Miss Community Service bringing in more than 300 can food and non-perishable items, the can food drive raised more than 1,500 items!
This year's pageant was hosted by the lovely and talented Brittney Shipp of News Channel 3 and took place at the South Mountain Community College - Performing Arts Center. Co-Hosts and Emcees included: the 2008 Miss Black Arizona Qiana Barner, teen hostess Chloe Grave, Ingrid Bohannan, Kim Tate and radio personality Jassy D of 101.5 Jamz. Contestants competed in the areas of: Interview, Personal Introduction, Talent, Personal Fitness and Formal wear, while the finalists also competed in an on stage question-and-answer competition. Prizes include a $1500 scholarship, a diamond watch, spa and beauty services, travel and modeling school and much more! The Miss Black Arizona and Miss Black Teen Arizona Scholarship Pageants were developed to promote cultural, social, and leadership status, on a state and national level, within the African American Community. It provides a forum for today's African American woman to express their viewpoints, talents and accomplishments to audiences. The Miss Black Arizona Pageant is a community driven organization and is committed to addressing health and education, two leading social issues in the African American community. The Pageants celebrate scholastic achievement and believe that education is the key to lifelong success and empowerment. The Miss Black Arizona Pageant promotes education and leadership by providing scholarship opportunities to its winners.
